More Simple

I had a great weekend retreat at church on Friday and Saturday this weekend. Then, to end my Saturday perfectly, I was able to go to a show with a friend and enjoy a lovely meal at one of our favorite restaurants.

This dear friend, has been a God-send to me. She is strong in her faith, bubbly in her personality, and as down-to-earth as they come; thus, we have had some wonderful, meaningful conversations. Part of my gratitude in this blog goes to having her as a friend.

The other part includes taking the time for both of us to realize how much we prefer a 'simple' life to the crazy, hustle-bustle of today's techno world. Don't get me wrong, I love my phone and it's very seldom that you'll find me without my phone close by. However, I am glad that I notice and appreciate the times that I don't need/want my phone right by.

As we were conversing over dinner, we happened to notice couples of all ages, families with small children, adult female friends, and the all sorts of other combinations having a Saturday night dinner, too. The only difference between us and them at this point was that during the duration of our dinner, neither of us took out our phone to look at it, make a call, check Facebook, etc. even once. All the other members seemed to be on their phone constantly, checking it periodically or glancing down under the table every now and then. Now.... I must confess, this can be me from time to time. Don't get me wrong. But, I do like the idea that cell phones shouldn't be used during meals, or other times of socializing. There is so much we miss out on with others the minute we chose technology over comradery.

I am thankful for technology, and the means to enjoy some of the coolest technology out there; But even more important than that, I am thankful to know that technology can NOT replace the intimacy of a genuine person-to-person relationship. I'm glad that I realize this, and so glad I appreciate it!

- I thank my God every time I remember you.- Phil 1:3
